Tax Collection

The firm handles all types of major collection matters, both administratively and in the courts, involving the IRS, the FTB, the State Board of Equalization, and the Employment Development Department. The firm works with clients to develop the optimal strategy for dealing with unpaid tax liabilities, including situations where taxes are owed to more than one tax agency, and including situations where the taxpayer is considering filing for bankruptcy. Collection matters which the firm handles include:

  • Representation before the Internal Revenue Service Collection Division of individuals and businesses that owe taxes to the IRS, including income taxes, payroll taxes, penalty assessments, excise taxes, estate and gift taxes, and other types of tax liabilities
  • Representation before the Collection Divisions of the Franchise Tax Board, the State Board of Equalization, and the Employment Development Department, of individuals and businesses that owe taxes to one or more of these tax agencies
  • Representation of individuals and businesses in Tax Court in Collection Due Process appeal cases
  • Representation of individuals and businesses in collection suits in U.S. District Courts
  • Representation of potential “responsible persons” where IRS, the California State Board of Equalization and/or the Employment Development Department are seeking to hold a person personally liable for employment taxes or sales and use taxes owed by a business
